Peonies
Emblem of China and healing flower of the Greek god Peon, we find them at Giverny in their herbaceous or Japanese tree version, adapted to the climate of Normandy.
When and where to see them?
In April and May, don’t miss them! Monet painted them in 1882, and again in 1887. The paintings are exhibited at the Foundation Beyeler in Bâle and in the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
How to cultivate them?
Particularly hardy perennials, they easily maintain themselves in the garden with little care. They appreciate a little fertilizer in spring; but do not necessarily suffer immediately from neglect. After several years, they need to be divided to invigorate them.
